==Population==
The population of Britain as a whole is likely to have declined sharply around the 4th century from around 2–4 million in AD&nbsp;200 to less than 1 million in AD&nbsp;300. There would have been a similarly sharp decline in the population of Sussex during this period.<ref name="Brandon 1978 225">{{harvnb|Brandon|1978|pp=225}}</ref> At the end of the 4th century there was a decline in the birth rate across Roman Britain; this population decrease would have been exacerbated by the transfer to Continental Europe of three large armies, recruited in Britain in the last 30 years of Roman rule, as well as [[Plague (disease)|plague]] and barbarian attack.<ref name="Brandon 1978 225"/> Sussex's population around 450 is estimated to have been no more than about 25,000, rising gradually to around 35,000 by 1100.<ref name="Brandon 1978 225"/> At the time of the Domesday Book in 1086, Sussex had some of the highest population densities in England.<ref>{{harvnb|Higham|Ryan|2013| p=324}}</ref>
