==Post-playing career==
On retiring from playing in 1970 he was already an active bookmaker. He sold his chain of bookmakers to The Tote in 1976.<ref name=guaob>[https://www.theguardian.com/football/2005/oct/20/newsstory.sportobituaries "Johnny Haynes" theguardian.com 20 October 2005]</ref> In 1985 he moved to [[Edinburgh]], the city of his partner Avril.<ref name=guaob/><ref name=scot>[https://www.scotsman.com/news-2-15012/stars-bid-farewell-to-haynes-the-legend-1-964193 "Stars bid farewell to Haynes the legend" The Scotsman, 2005]</ref> Haynes first met Avril in the 1960s when she travelled down to London to buy stock for boutiques she ran in Edinburgh.<ref name=scot/> On moving to Edinburgh he ran a laundry business with Avril,<ref name=greaves>[https://www.theguardian.com/football/2005/oct/23/sport.comment "How Johnny's genius served the nation" theguardian.com 23 October 2005]</ref> played golf<ref name=guaob/> and watched local club, [[Heart of Midlothian F.C.|Heart of Midlothian]]. In 2004 he and Avril married in a private ceremony at [[Dalkeith]] registry office.<ref name=scot/>
