Hines was drafted by the [[Miami Dolphins]] of the NFL in the sixth round of the [[1968 NFL/AFL draft]].<ref>{{cite web |title=1968 NFL Draft Listing |url=https://www.pro-football-reference.com/years/1968/draft.htm |website=Pro-Football-Reference.com |access-date=5 June 2023 |language=en}}</ref> Hines spent the [[1968 NFL season|1968 season]] on the Dolphins' [[practice squad]]. He was given the nickname "Oops".
