==Geography==
According to the [[United States Census Bureau|US Census Bureau]], the county has a total area of {{convert|602|sqmi}}, of which {{convert|584|sqmi}} is land and {{convert|18|sqmi}} (3.0%) is water.<ref name=CD/> The average elevation is around {{convert|400|ft|m}}, except near the Mississippi River.

The first coal mine in Illinois was opened on the south bank of the [[Big Muddy River]] near the present-day Route 127 Bridge.

In recent years, average temperatures in the county seat of Murphysboro have ranged from a low of {{convert|21|°F}} in January to a high of {{convert|88|°F}} in July, although a record low of {{convert|-25|°F}} was recorded in January 1977 and a record high of {{convert|113|°F}} was recorded in August 1930.
