==Geography== Jackson is located at (37.553012, −83.388249). The city is nestled in the heart of the Cumberland Plateau of the Appalachian Mountains, with the downtown located on the north bank of the North Fork of the Kentucky River. To limit flooding, the Kentucky River was redirected in 1963 by way of a small cut-through through the mountain, and its former channel, a river meander, was left behind as Panbowl Lake, now a prime attraction for fishermen. According to the United States Census Bureau, Jackson has a total area of 6.9 km2, of which 6.5 km2 is land and 0.4 km2, or 6.11%, is water. ===Climate=== The climate in this area is characterized by relatively moderate temperatures and evenly distributed precipitation throughout the year. The Köppen climate classification places the city in the humid subtropical zone, which is abbreviated as Cfa. The normal monthly mean temperature ranges from 34.9 in January to 75.4 in July. On average, there are 17 days where temperatures remain at or below freezing and 15 days with highs at or above 90 per year. In addition, although the area falls under USDA hardiness zone 6b, the record longest streak without 0 lows occurred from February 6, 1996, to January 15, 2009 (). The highest recorded temperature was 104 F on June 29, 2012, and the lowest recorded temperature was −18 on January 19, 1994, and January 20 and 21, 1985. Precipitation averages 48.3 in annually, falling on an average 144 days, and the wettest month by normal rainfall is May. Normal winter snowfall is 23.5 in, though, as is typical in areas in the humid subtropical zone, snow cover does not remain for long, as there is an average of only 18 days with at least 1 in of snow cover. {{Weather box |location = Jackson, Kentucky (Julian Carroll Airport, 1381 ft AMSL, ), 1991–2020 normals, extremes 1981–present |single line = Y |Jan record high F = 78 |Feb record high F = 80 |Mar record high F = 87 |Apr record high F = 92 |May record high F = 91 |Jun record high F = 104 |Jul record high F = 101 |Aug record high F = 101 |Sep record high F = 98 |Oct record high F = 97 |Nov record high F = 84 |Dec record high F = 79 |year record high F = 104 |Jan high F = 44.2 |Feb high F = 48.8 |Mar high F = 58.0 |Apr high F = 69.2 |May high F = 75.7 |Jun high F = 82.2 |Jul high F = 85.0 |Aug high F = 84.4 |Sep high F = 79.0 |Oct high F = 68.8 |Nov high F = 57.4 |Dec high F = 47.6 |year high F = 66.7 |Jan mean F = 35.8 |Feb mean F = 39.7 |Mar mean F = 47.8 |Apr mean F = 58.2 |May mean F = 65.6 |Jun mean F = 72.6 |Jul mean F = 75.7 |Aug mean F = 74.9 |Sep mean F = 69.1 |Oct mean F = 58.7 |Nov mean F = 48.1 |Dec mean F = 39.7 |year mean F = 57.2 |Jan low F = 27.4 |Feb low F = 30.5 |Mar low F = 37.6 |Apr low F = 47.3 |May low F = 55.6 |Jun low F = 62.9 |Jul low F = 66.5 |Aug low F = 65.3 |Sep low F = 59.1 |Oct low F = 48.5 |Nov low F = 38.8 |Dec low F = 31.8 |year low F = 47.6 |Jan record low F = −18 |Feb record low F = −8 |Mar record low F = 7 |Apr record low F = 20 |May record low F = 30 |Jun record low F = 44 |Jul record low F = 52 |Aug record low F = 45 |Sep record low F = 34 |Oct record low F = 26 |Nov record low F = 13 |Dec record low F = −13 |year record low F = -18 |precipitation colour = green |Jan precipitation inch = 3.96 |Feb precipitation inch = 4.06 |Mar precipitation inch = 4.71 |Apr precipitation inch = 4.54 |May precipitation inch = 5.17 |Jun precipitation inch = 5.25 |Jul precipitation inch = 5.10 |Aug precipitation inch = 4.26 |Sep precipitation inch = 3.42 |Oct precipitation inch = 3.45 |Nov precipitation inch = 3.50 |Dec precipitation inch = 4.47 |year precipitation inch = 51.89 |Jan snow inch = 7.4 |Feb snow inch = 6.7 |Mar snow inch = 4.0 |Apr snow inch = 0.4 |May snow inch = 0.0 |Jun snow inch = 0.0 |Jul snow inch = 0.0 |Aug snow inch = 0.0 |Sep snow inch = 0.0 |Oct snow inch = 0.1 |Nov snow inch = 0.7 |Dec snow inch = 4.1 |year snow inch = 23.4 |unit precipitation days = 0.01 in |Jan precipitation days = 14.4 |Feb precipitation days = 13.8 |Mar precipitation days = 14.4 |Apr precipitation days = 13.2 |May precipitation days = 13.8 |Jun precipitation days = 12.7 |Jul precipitation days = 12.6 |Aug precipitation days = 10.5 |Sep precipitation days = 8.2 |Oct precipitation days = 9.5 |Nov precipitation days = 11.0 |Dec precipitation days = 13.9 |year precipitation days = 148.0 |unit snow days = 0.1 in |Jan snow days = 6.3 |Feb snow days = 5.6 |Mar snow days = 3.3 |Apr snow days = 0.5 |May snow days = 0.0 |Jun snow days = 0.0 |Jul snow days = 0.0 |Aug snow days = 0.0 |Sep snow days = 0.0 |Oct snow days = 0.1 |Nov snow days = 1.1 |Dec snow days = 4.7 |year snow days = 21.6 |source 1 = NOAA<ref name = NOAA>{{cite web | url = https://w2.weather.gov/climate/xmacis.php?wfo=jkl | title = NowData -
