[[general (U.S.)|Gen.]] [[Green Clay]] established the town of Irvine on {{convert|20.5|acre|ha}} of his land on January 28, 1812,<ref name=sos/> four years after [[Estill County, Kentucky|Estill County]] was separated from [[Madison County, Kentucky|Madison County]]. It was named for [[colonel (U.S.)|Col]].
