The airport opened for business in early 2001 to replace the older Gimpo International Airport, which now serves mostly domestic destinations plus shuttle flights to  [[Beijing Capital International Airport|Beijing–Capital]], [[Kansai International Airport|Osaka–Kansai]], [[Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport|Shanghai–Hongqiao]], [[Songshan Airport|Taipei–Songshan]] and [[Haneda Airport|Tokyo–Haneda]] although flights to Beijing and Osaka also operate from Incheon Airport. The airport is a hub for international civilian air transportation and cargo traffic in East Asia. In 2016, the Incheon International Airport was the fifth-busiest [[World's busiest airports by cargo traffic|airport]] in the world and [[List of busiest airports by cargo traffic|third in Asia]] by cargo traffic, and [[List of busiest airports by passenger traffic|19th]] in the world and [[List of the busiest airports in Asia|eighth in Asia]] by passenger traffic.
