The history of Luxembourg properly began with the construction of Luxembourg Castle in the [[High Middle Ages]]. It was [[Sigfried, Count of the Ardennes|Siegfried I]], count of [[Ardennes]] who traded some of his ancestral lands with the monks of the [[Abbey of St. Maximin]] in [[Trier]] in 963 for an ancient, supposedly Roman, fort named ''Lucilinburhuc'', commonly translated as "little castle".<ref name = luxembourg>{{cite news| url=http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/04/17/whos-afraid-of-greater-luxembourg/ | work=The New York Times | first=Frank | last=Jacobs | title=Who's Afraid of Greater Luxembourg? | date=17 April 2012}}</ref> Modern historians link the etymology of the word with ''Letze'',<ref name = luxembourg/> meaning fortification, which may have referred to either the remains of a Roman watchtower or to a primitive refuge of the early Middle Ages.
