The population density was 1,587.2 per square mile (612.9/km{{sup|2}}). There were 12,028 housing units at an average density of 749.9 per square mile (289.6/km{{sup|2}}). The racial makeup was 45.23% (11,514) [[White (U.S. Census)|white]], 43.77% (11,143) [[African American (U.S. Census)|black or African-American]], 0.32% (81) [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 1.53% (390) [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.04% (10) [[Pacific Islander (U.S. Census)|Pacific Islander]], 2.65% (674) from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 6.47% (1,646) from two or more races. 21.3% of the population was under the age of 18, 13.1% from 18 to 24, 24.4% from 25 to 44, 24.6% from 45 to 64, and 15.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38.4 years. For every 100 females, the population had 90.5 males. For every 100 females ages 18 and older, there were 81.5 males.
