On February 28, 2012, around 9:02 pm, an [[Enhanced Fujita Scale|EF]]-2 tornado caused damage to Harveyville.<ref name="TCJ-20120229">[http://cjonline.com/news/2012-02-29/harveyville-tornado-classified-ef-2 Harveyville tornado classified as EF-2; The Topeka Capital-Journal; February 29, 2012.]</ref><ref>[https://archive.today/20120907141018/http://www.kctv5.com/story/17041098/punishing-storms-hit-harveyville-cause-injuries-damage Possible tornado causes injuries, extensive damage in Harveyville; KCTV5; February 28, 2012.]</ref>  Approximately 40 percent of Harveyville's buildings experienced significant damage and one of the town's two churches was completely destroyed.
