Hamilton gained an additional {{convert|20|sqmi|km2|sigfig=2}}, whereas Essex County lost {{convert|30|sqmi|km2|sigfig=2}}. The former town of [[Gilman, New York|Gilman]] was dissolved in 1860. The original county seat was Sageville, now part of Lake Pleasant.
