===Name===
The municipality (originally the [[prestegjeld|parish]]) is named after the old ''Hamarøya'' island ({{langx|non|Hamarøy}}), which is now a peninsula, since the first [[Hamarøy Church]] was built there. The first element is the [[genitive case]] of the word {{wikt-lang|non|hǫm}} which means "[[thigh]]/[[leg]] (of an [[animal]])". The last element is {{wikt-lang|no|øy}} which means "[[island]]".
