==Geography== Greenville is located in central Muhlenberg County at {{coord|37|12|26|N|87|10|35|W|type:city}} (37.207158, -87.176499).<ref name="GR1">{{cite web|url=https://www.census.gov/geographies/reference-files/time-series/geo/gazetteer-files.html|publisher=[[United States Census Bureau]]|access-date=2011-04-23|date=2011-02-12|title=US Gazetteer files: 2010, 2000, and 1990}}</ref> It is bordered to the northeast by the city of [[Powderly, Kentucky|Powderly]]. [[U.S. Route 62]] passes through Greenville as Main Street and Hopkinsville Street. It leads northeast through Powderly {{convert|7|mi|0}} to [[Central City, Kentucky|Central]] and west {{convert|17|mi}} to [[Nortonville, Kentucky|Nortonville]]. [[Kentucky Route 189]] passes through the northern part of Greenville and bypasses the downtown to the northwest; it leads southwest {{convert|33|mi}} to [[Hopkinsville, Kentucky|Hopkinsville]]. [[Kentucky Route 181]] joins US 62 through the center of Greenville but leads north {{convert|16|mi}} to [[Sacramento, Kentucky|Sacramento]] and south {{convert|30|mi}} to [[Elkton, Kentucky|Elkton]]. [[Kentucky Route 171]] also leads south to Elkton but by a longer western route. [[Kentucky Route 178]] leads east {{convert|7|mi|0}} to [[Drakesboro, Kentucky|Drakesboro]]. According to the [[United States Census Bureau]], Greenville has a total area of {{convert|5.27|sqmi|km2}}, of which {{convert|5.14|sqmi|km2}} are land and {{convert|0.14|sqmi|2}}, or 2.62%, are water.<ref name="CenPopGazetteer2022"/> It is drained by Caney Creek, which flows eastward through the northern part of the city toward Pond Creek, a tributary of the [[Green River (Kentucky)|Green River]].
