The Godolphin Arabian was a [[bay (horse)|bay]] colour with some white on the off heel behind. He stood at {{hands|15}} and was distinguished by an unnaturally high crest, which is noticeable from portraits of the horse.{{sfn|Whyte|1840|p=85}} Most of his immediate offspring were also bay.{{sfn|Whyte|1840|p=88}}

The veterinary surgeon Osmer described the Godolphin Arabian in the following manner,
