==Geography== Godfrey is located in the northwest corner of Madison County at {{coord|38|56|53|N|90|12|10|W|type:city}} (38.948097, -90.202886).<ref name="GR1">{{cite web|url=https://www.census.gov/geographies/reference-files/time-series/geo/gazetteer-files.html|publisher=[[United States Census Bureau]]|access-date=April 23, 2011|date=February 12, 2011|title=US Gazetteer files: 2010, 2000, and 1990}}</ref> It is bordered to the southeast by the city of [[Alton, Illinois|Alton]], to the east by [[Foster Township, Madison County, Illinois|Foster Township]], to the north and west by [[Jersey County, Illinois|Jersey County]], and to the south by the [[Mississippi River]], across which is the city of [[West Alton, Missouri]]. Godfrey is {{convert|32|mi}} by road north of downtown [[St. Louis]]. According to the [[U.S. Census Bureau]], Godfrey has a total area of {{convert|36.4|sqmi|sqkm|1}}, of which {{convert|34.4|sqmi|sqkm|1}} are land and {{convert|2.0|sqmi|sqkm|1}}, or 5.39%, are water.<ref name="CenPopGazetteer2022"/> The southwestern edge of the village is a wall of {{convert|200|ft|m|adj=mid|-high|-1}} limestone bluffs along the [[Mississippi River]]. Approximately {{convert|12|mi}} upstream is the mouth of the [[Illinois River]]. The [[Missouri River]] empties into the Mississippi {{convert|10|mi}} downstream. Godfrey retains the status of a village and is a mixture of small business, agriculture, and upper middle class housing developments. Several highways cross the village. [[U.S. Route 67]] passes through the village center, leading south into Alton and thence into Missouri, while to the north it leads {{convert|14|mi}} to [[Jerseyville, Illinois|Jerseyville]]. [[Illinois Route 3]] passes through the southern part of the village, leading southeast into the north part of Alton and west {{convert|17|mi}} to [[Grafton, Illinois|Grafton]]. [[Illinois Route 100]] follows the Mississippi River along the southern edge of the village, leading east into the center of Alton and west-northwest {{convert|12|mi}} to Grafton. [[Illinois Route 267]] splits off from US 67 north of the village center and leads northeast {{convert|6|mi|0}} to [[Brighton, Illinois|Brighton]]. Finally, [[Illinois Route 255]], a four-lane expressway, has its northern terminus at US 67 in Godfrey; it leads southeast {{convert|20|mi}} to Interstates [[Interstate 255|255]] and [[Interstate 270 (Missouri–Illinois)|270]] in [[Pontoon Beach, Illinois|Pontoon Beach]].
