==Geography== Floydada is located southwest of the center of Floyd County at {{coord|33|59|2|N|101|20|14|W|type:city}} (33.983771, β101.337259).<ref name="GR1">{{cite web|url=https://www.census.gov/geographies/reference-files/time-series/geo/gazetteer-files.html|publisher=[[United States Census Bureau]]|access-date=2011-04-23|date=2011-02-12|title=US Gazetteer files: 2010, 2000, and 1990}}</ref> [[U.S. Route 62]] enters from the southwest as Ralls Highway and leads east out of town as Houston Street, while [[U.S. Route 70]] enters from the north as Second Street and joins US 62 to exit town on Houston Street. Via US 62 it is {{convert|51|mi}} southwest to [[Lubbock, Texas|Lubbock]], while US 70 leads northwest {{convert|27|mi}} to [[Plainview, Texas|Plainview]]. The two highways lead east together {{convert|31|mi}} to [[Matador, Texas|Matador]]. [[Texas State Highway 207]] leads north from Floydada {{convert|35|mi}} to [[Silverton, Texas|Silverton]]. According to the [[United States Census Bureau]], Floydada has a total area of {{convert|5.3|km2|order=flip}}, all of it land.<ref name="Census 2010"/> Floydada lies on the High Plains of the [[Llano Estacado]] around {{convert|18|mi}} west of the [[Caprock Escarpment]]. [[Blanco Canyon]], a scenic canyon carved by the [[White River (Texas)|White River]], is {{convert|6|mi|0}} to the south. The terrain surrounding Floydada consists of level plains that at one time were covered with grassland vegetation and populated with [[American bison|bison]]. The bison were extirpated, and with the exception of Blanco Canyon, the shortgrass prairie has been replaced by plowed cropland, where cotton, grain sorghum, wheat, and pumpkins are grown.
