==Geography== Flower Mound is located approximately 20 mi northwest of Dallas and 25 mi northeast of Fort Worth on the border between Denton and Tarrant counties. The town is located almost entirely in Denton County, however it has areas that extend into Tarrant County.County Information It is situated on the basin of the Trinity River in the Eastern Cross Timbers subregion in Texas.TPWD The town borders Lewisville to the east and a number of cities and towns to the north, including Highland Village, Double Oak, and Bartonville. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 43.4 sqmi.Census Land comprises 41.39 sqmi (95.37%) of the total area; Denton County soils include the Silawa, Nawo, Gasil series. Water comprises 2.5 sqmi (5.76%) of the total area; Grapevine Lake and Marshall Creek form much of the town's southern boundary. Flower Mound's climate is classified as humid subtropical; the town averages 233 sunny days per year and 79 days of precipitation. The town encourages conservation development projects to protect and preserve existing open space, vistas, and natural habitats while allowing for controlled growth. Much of the town is located on the Barnett Shale, and drilling for shale gas in close proximity to residential neighborhoods has sharply divided parts of the community.HawesHundleyMaxwell In 1994, amateur fossil collector Gary Byrd discovered a fossilized example of a Hadrosaurid dinosaur among black shale rock formations in the southwestern edge of the town, near Grapevine Lake.FWMSH The fossilized creature from the Cenomanian age was named "Protohadros byrdi" in Byrd's honor. ===βThe Moundβ=== Flower Mound was named for a 12.5 acre hill approximately 50 ft in height located close to the intersection of FM 3040 and FM 2499. The formation attracted the attention of early settlers to the area, and is often simply referred to as "The Mound". Part of the Texas blackland prairies, The Mound is typically covered by big bluestem, little bluestem, and Indian grasses. During blooming seasons, dozens of varieties of flowers can grow on its slopes, often aided by the water retained by gilgai formations. Though surrounded by commercial and residential development, The Mound is owned and maintained by The Mound Foundation, a non-profit private–public partnership. The group has advocated for a controlled burn on The Mound for many years, and it expressed relief when an accidental New Year's Eve fire in late 2011 spurred the growth of wildflowers for the first time in years.Hundley ===Climate=== {{Weather box | location = Flower Mound, Texas | width = 50% | single line = Y | collapsed = yes | Jan high F = 54 | Feb high F = 60 | Mar high F = 68 | Apr high F = 75 | May high F = 82 | Jun high F = 90 | Jul high F = 95 | Aug high F = 95 | Sep high F = 87 | Oct high F = 78 | Nov high F = 65 | Dec high F = 57 | Jan record high F = 90 | Feb record high F = 96 | Mar record high F = 99 | Apr record high F = 102 | May record high F = 107 | Jun record high F = 108 | Jul record high F = 113 | Aug record high F = 113 | Sep record high F = 111 | Oct record high F = 103 | Nov record high F = 99 | Dec record high F = 89 | year record high F = 113 | year high F = 76 | Jan low F = 31 | Feb low F = 36 | Mar low F = 44 | Apr low F = 52 | May low F = 61 | Jun low F = 69 | Jul low F = 73 | Aug low F = 72 | Sep low F = 65 | Oct low F = 54 | Nov low F = 43 | Dec low F = 34 | Jan record low F = β3 | Feb record low F = β2 | Mar record low F = 5 | Apr record low F = 23 | May record low F = 35 | Jun record low F = 48 | Jul record low F = 51 | Aug record low F = 52 | Sep record low F = 36 | Oct record low F = 16 | Nov record low F = 10 | Dec record low F = 6 | year record low F = β3 | year low F = 53 | precipitation colour = green | Jan precipitation inch = 1.92 | Feb precipitation inch = 2.41 | Mar precipitation inch = 2.99 | Apr precipitation inch = 3.40 | May precipitation inch = 5.17 | Jun precipitation inch = 3.63 | Jul precipitation inch = 2.29 | Aug precipitation inch = 2.16 | Sep precipitation inch = 3.05 | Oct precipitation inch = 4.38 | Nov precipitation inch = 2.79 | Dec precipitation inch = 2.65 | year precipitation inch = 36.84 | Jan snow inch = 0.6 | Feb snow inch = 0.3 | Mar snow inch = 0.3 | Apr snow inch = 0 | May snow inch = 0 | Jun snow inch = 0 | Jul snow inch = 0 | Aug snow inch = 0 | Sep snow inch = 0 | Oct snow inch = 0 | Nov snow inch = 0 | Dec snow inch = 0.1 | year snow inch = 1.3 | source 1 = }}
