==Political career==
She made several unsuccessful attempts to win election to the [[House of Commons of the United Kingdom|House of Commons]] as a [[Labour Party (UK)|Labour]] MP. In [[1935 United Kingdom general election|1935]] she contested [[Cheltenham (UK Parliament constituency)|Cheltenham]], which was a safely [[Conservative Party (UK)|Conservative]] seat, and in [[1950 United Kingdom general election|1950]] she was defeated by [[Quintin Hogg, Baron Hailsham of St Marylebone|Quintin Hogg]] at [[Oxford (UK Parliament constituency)|Oxford]].
