==Geography== Cumberland is located in northeastern Harlan County at {{Coord|36|58|37|N|82|59|15|W|type:city}} (36.977016, -82.987434)<ref name="GR1">{{cite web|url=https://www.census.gov/geographies/reference-files/time-series/geo/gazetteer-files.html|publisher=[[United States Census Bureau]]|access-date=2011-04-23|date=2011-02-12|title=US Gazetteer files: 2010, 2000, and 1990}}</ref> in the valley of the Poor Fork of the [[Cumberland River]], where it is joined by Looney Creek from the southeast and Cloverlick Creek from the south. The city limits extend to the north up to the crest of [[Pine Mountain (Appalachian Mountains)|Pine Mountain]], which forms the [[Letcher County, Kentucky|Letcher County]] line. Elevations within the city range from {{convert|1400|ft}} above sea level along the Poor Fork on the west side of town to {{convert|2700|ft}} atop Pine Mountain. [[U.S. Route 119]] passes through Cumberland, passing south of the city center. US 119 leads northeast {{convert|34|mi}} to [[Jenkins, Kentucky|Jenkins]] and southwest {{convert|22|mi}} to [[Harlan, Kentucky|Harlan]], the Harlan County seat. [[Kentucky Route 160]] passes through the center of Cumberland, leading southeast {{convert|2.5|mi}} to [[Benham, Kentucky|Benham]] and {{convert|12|mi}} to the [[Virginia]] border, and north over Pine Mountain {{convert|5|mi|0}} to [[Gordon, Kentucky|Gordon]].
