The county is located in the geographic center of Oregon. According to the [[U.S. Census Bureau]], the county has a total area of {{convert|2987|sqmi}}, of which {{convert|2979|sqmi}} is land and {{convert|8.2|sqmi}} (0.3%) is water.<ref name="GR1">{{Cite web |date=August 22, 2012 |title=2010 Census Gazetteer Files |url=http://www2.census.gov/geo/docs/maps-data/data/gazetteer/counties_list_41.txt |access-date=February 25, 2015 |publisher=United States Census Bureau}}</ref> The largest body of water in Crook County is the [[Prineville Reservoir]]. The county has been reduced from its original size of {{convert|8600|sqmi|km2}} by the creation of [[Jefferson County, Oregon|Jefferson County]] in 1914 and [[Deschutes County, Oregon|Deschutes County]] in 1916. The present boundaries were established in 1927.

The oldest [[geology|geological]] formation in Oregon is in the southeastern corner of Crook County, near its boundary with [[Grant County, Oregon|Grant County]]. This formation is an outcropping of [[Devonian]] [[limestone]] created from a larger reef when most of Oregon was covered by water.
