==Geography==
Connellsville is located in northeastern Fayette County along the [[Youghiogheny River]], a northward-flowing tributary of the [[Monongahela River]]. The city lies on both sides of the river, with the downtown on the eastern side. It is bordered to the south by the borough of [[South Connellsville, Pennsylvania|South Connellsville]]. [[U.S. Route 119 in Pennsylvania|U.S. Route 119]] passes through the northern and western sides of the city, leading north {{convert|22|mi}} to [[Greensburg, Pennsylvania|Greensburg]] and southwest {{convert|11|mi}} to [[Uniontown, Pennsylvania|Uniontown]], the Fayette County seat. [[Pittsburgh]] is {{convert|50|mi}} to the northwest via US 119 and [[Interstate 76 (Ohio–New Jersey)|Interstate 76]].

As of the [[2000 United States census|2000 census]],<ref name="GR2" /> there were 9,146 people, 3,963 households, and 2,377 families residing in the city. The population density was {{convert|4,053.5|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. There were 4,434 housing units at an average density of {{convert|1,965.2|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. The [[Race and ethnicity in the United States census|racial makeup]] of the city was 94.54% White, 3.93% Black, 0.13% American Indian, 0.33% Asian, 0.17% from other races, and 0.90% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.54% of the population.

There were 3,963 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.3% were married couples living together, 15.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 40.0% were non-families. Of all households, 35.9% were made up of individuals, and 19.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.28 and the average family size was 2.97.

In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.5% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 27.6% from 25 to 44, 20.7% from 45 to 64, and 19.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 86.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 80.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $21,070, and the median income for a family was $28,105. Males had a median income of $28,942 versus $23,016 for females. About 22.4% of families and 28.2% of the population were below the [[poverty line]], including 45.5% of those under age 18 and 16.4% of those age 65 or over.
