Voters in Columbia County since the mid-19th century have mostly elected [[Republican Party (United States)|Republicans]] to office. But from 1996 to 2007, new voter registrations by [[Democratic Party (United States)|Democrats]] have outpaced those by Republicans by a margin of 4 to 1.<ref name="test">{{cite web|url=http://www.elections.ny.gov/EnrollmentCounty.html |title=New York State Board of Elections Enrollment by County Page |access-date=December 20, 2014 |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20141218050402/http://www.elections.ny.gov/EnrollmentCounty.html |archive-date=December 18, 2014 }}</ref> Democrats have been able to win the county in every presidential election since 1996, with [[Joe Biden]]'s 57% of the vote in 2020 being the highest for a Democrat in the county since 1964.
