The building that is now {{Lang|ca|Casa Batlló|italic=no}} was built in 1877, commissioned by Lluís Sala Sánchez.{{sfn|Bassegoda i Nonell|2001b|p=4}} It was a classical building without remarkable characteristics within the [[eclecticism]] traditional by the end of the 19th century.{{sfn|Bassegoda i Nonell|2001|p=75}} The building had a basement, a ground floor, four other floors and a garden in the back.<ref name="workart">{{Cite web|url=https://www.casabatllo.es/en/antoni-gaudi/works/|title=Works of Antoni Gaudí|website=Casa Batlló}}</ref>
