==Geography== === Topography === Burgas is situated at the westernmost point of the bay by the same name and in the eastern part of the Burgas Plain, in the east of the Upper Thracian Plain. Burgas is located some 360 km from Sofia, 255 km from Plovdiv, 130 km from Varna, and from Istanbul. To the west, south and north, the city is surrounded by the Burgas Lakes: Burgas, Atanasovsko, and Mandrensko, which are home to several hundred bird species. Pan-European corridor 8 passes through the city, the European routes E87 and E773, and the longest national rout I/6. Burgas does not have a Mediterranean climate because the average annual precipitation is evenly distributed, with no dry season, which is the requirement for a humid subtropical climate. Whereas the requirement of a Mediterranean climate is a dry summer, which Burgas does not have. Do not change this, otherwise it will be reverted. --> Under the Köppen climate classification, Burgas has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen: Cfa). The summertime in Burgas lasts about five months from mid-May until late September. Average temperatures during high season is 24 C. Summertime sea temperatures stay around 23-24 at sunrise and go up to by dusk, averaging 26 C. Winters are milder compared with the inland part of the country, with average temperatures of and below 0 C during the night. Snow is possible in December, January, February and rarely in March; however, it can quickly melt. The highest temperature was recorded in June 2007, at 42.8 C and the lowest at in January 1942. {{Weather box |location = Burgas, Bulgaria (1991-2020) |metric first = yes |single line = yes |Jan record high C = 20.1 |Feb record high C = 23.2 |Mar record high C = 27.3 |Apr record high C = 31.8 |May record high C = 34.9 |Jun record high C = 42.8 |Jul record high C = 41.3 |Aug record high C = 41.7 |Sep record high C = 36.2 |Oct record high C = 34.0 |Nov record high C = 27.2 |Dec record high C = 22.8 |year record high C = 42.8 |Jan high C = 6.5 |Feb high C = 8.9 |Mar high C = 12.1 |Apr high C = 16.2 |May high C = 21.5 |Jun high C = 26.5 |Jul high C = 28.8 |Aug high C = 28.8 |Sep high C = 24.5 |Oct high C = 19.0 |Nov high C = 13.5 |Dec high C = 7.9 |year high C = 17.9 |Jan mean C = 2.9 |Feb mean C = 4.4 |Mar mean C = 7.3 |Apr mean C = 11.3 |May mean C = 16.7 |Jun mean C = 21.4 |Jul mean C = 23.8 |Aug mean C = 23.9 |Sep mean C = 19.7 |Oct mean C = 14.6 |Nov mean C = 9.5 |Dec mean C = 4.6 |year mean C = 13.3 |Jan low C = 0.3 |Feb low C = 1.3 |Mar low C = 4.0 |Apr low C = 8.0 |May low C = 13.0 |Jun low C = 17.6 |Jul low C = 19.9 |Aug low C = 20.0 |Sep low C = 15.8 |Oct low C = 11.3 |Nov low C = 6.9 |Dec low C = 2.1 |year low C = 10.0 |Jan record low C = -21.6 |Feb record low C = -19.5 |Mar record low C = -15.0 |Apr record low C = -1.5 |May record low C = 2.2 |Jun record low C = 6.0 |Jul record low C = 10.2 |Aug record low C = 10.9 |Sep record low C = 4.0 |Oct record low C = -1.2 |Nov record low C = -9.6 |Dec record low C = -15.0 |year record low C = -21.6 |precipitation colour = green |Jan precipitation mm = 47.7 |Feb precipitation mm = 41.9 |Mar precipitation mm = 43.0 |Apr precipitation mm = 42.6 |May precipitation mm = 47.0 |Jun precipitation mm = 49.6 |Jul precipitation mm = 46.7 |Aug precipitation mm = 24.5 |Sep precipitation mm = 50.1 |Oct precipitation mm = 65.3 |Nov precipitation mm = 50.8 |Dec precipitation mm = 48.7 |year precipitation mm = 558.0 |Jan precipitation days = 8.1 |Feb precipitation days = 7.5 |Mar precipitation days = 8.1 |Apr precipitation days = 9.7 |May precipitation days = 9.2 |Jun precipitation days = 9.1 |Jul precipitation days = 6.1 |Aug precipitation days = 4.7 |Sep precipitation days = 5.3 |Oct precipitation days = 6.6 |Nov precipitation days = 9.0 |Dec precipitation days = 9.1 |year precipitation days = 92.6 |Jan humidity = 80.2 |Feb humidity = 77.6 |Mar humidity = 75.3 |Apr humidity = 76.4 |May humidity = 76 |Jun humidity = 73.4 |Jul humidity = 70.9 |Aug humidity = 71.4 |Sep humidity = 72.2 |Oct humidity = 77.1 |Nov humidity = 79.2 |Dec humidity = 80.6 |year humidity = 75.9 |Jan sun = 76 |Feb sun = 110 |Mar sun = 147 |Apr sun = 207 |May sun = 278 |Jun sun = 302 |Jul sun = 339 |Aug sun = 323 |Sep sun = 264 |Oct sun = 185 |Nov sun = 118 |Dec sun = 63 |year sun = 2412 |Jan uv = 1 |Feb uv = 2 |Mar uv = 4 |Apr uv = 5 |May uv = 7 |Jun uv = 8 |Jul uv = 9 |Aug uv = 8 |Sep uv = 5 |Oct uv = 4 |Nov uv = 2 |Dec uv = 1 |year uv = 4.7 |source 1 = Climatebase.ru |date=October 2013 }} === Flora and fauna === The Burgas Wetlands are highly recognized for their significance to biodiversity and as a resource pool for products used by people. Lake Burgas is Bulgaria's largest lake and is in the middle of the city. It is important for migrating birds. Over 250 species of birds inhabit the lake area, 61 of which are endangered in Bulgaria and 9 globally, attracting keen birdwatchers from all over the world. The lakes are also home to important fish and invertebrates. In the site have been recorded several IUCN Red-Listed species of animals – 5 invertebrates, 4 fish, 4 amphibians, 3 reptiles, 5 birds and 3 mammals. Situated along the second largest migration path of birds in Europe, the Via Pontica, the site is an important stopover and staging site for a large number of water-birds, raptors and passerines. Yearly during migration and wintering more than 20,000 (up to 100,000) waterbirds congregate there. The Atanasovo Lake is one of two salt-water lakes in the Black Sea region and contains rare and representative examples of wetland habitats. It is a hot spot for biodiversity, with many Red-Listed species of plants and animals. It is a well-known bottleneck site for migratory birds, with around 60,000 raptors and 240,000 storks, pelicans and cranes passing over the site and often landing in large numbers for staging. The highest numbers in Europe of migrating Great white pelican (Pelecanus onocrotalus), Dalmatian pelican (Pelecanus crispus), Western marsh harrier (Circus aeruginosus) and Red-footed Falcon (Falco vespertinus) have been recorded here. === Protected areas === * Burgas Lake Protected Area * Atanasovo Lake Protected Area * Mandra Lake Protected Area * Poda Protected Area * Usungeren Protected Area * Chengene Skele Protected Area * Strandzha Natural Park ===Administrative division=== Burgas is divided into the following neighbourhoods: {| |- | valign="top" | * Akatsiite * Bratya Miladinovi * Vazrazhdane * Gorno Ezerovo * Dolno Ezerovo * Zornitsa | valign="top" | * Izgrev * Lazur * Lozovo * Meden Rudnik * Petko Slaveykov * Pobeda | valign="top" | * Slaveikov * Sarafovo * Kraimorie * Centar * Vetren * Banevo |} With a decision from the Counsel of Ministers in 2009, the villages of Banevo and Vetren were incorporated into Burgas. Currently a new city plan is being considered which will open the city to the sea and includes several residential neighbourhoods and a new highway junction.
