==Geography==
According to the [[United States Census Bureau|U.S. Census Bureau]], the township has a total area of {{convert|48.72|sqmi|km2|2}}, of which {{convert|35.11|sqmi|km2|2}} is land and {{convert|13.61|sqmi|km2|2}} (27.94%) is water.

The township is located on the eastern end of the [[Straits of Mackinac]] directly north of the city of [[Cheboygan, Michigan|Cheboygan]].  It is politically and geographically part of the state's [[Upper Peninsula of Michigan|Upper Peninsula]].  While the rest of the Upper Peninsula uses the [[area code 906]], Bois Blanc Township is the only municipality in the Upper Peninsula that uses the [[area code 231]].<ref>{{cite web|last=[[North American Numbering Plan|NANP]] Administration|url=https://www.nationalnanpa.com/pdf/pl-nanp-167.pdf|title=North American Numbering Plan Letter|date=11 March 1999|accessdate=November 15, 2022}}</ref>  Bois Blanc Township is one of only seven municipalities in the state of Michigan to consist entirely of islands, including [[Grosse Ile Township, Michigan|Grosse Ile Township]], [[Drummond Township, Michigan|Drummond Township]], [[St. James Township, Michigan|St. James Township]], [[Mackinac Island, Michigan|Mackinac Island]], [[Peaine Township, Michigan|Peaine Township]], and [[Sugar Island Township, Michigan|Sugar Island Township]].

The township should not be confused with another [[Bois Blanc Island (Ontario)|Bois Blanc Island]], which is a Canadian island in the [[Detroit River]] much further to the south.  That island is also nicknamed "Boblo."
