==Geography== Blowing Rock is located in southern Watauga County in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The southernmost portion of the town, including the actual Blowing Rock cliff, is located in Caldwell County. The town is located on the crest of the Blue Ridge. Most of the town lies just north of the crest, with waters draining north to the Middle Fork of the New River and thence to the Ohio River valley, while to the south of the ridgecrest, waters flow via the Johns River to the Catawba River valley and eventually to the Atlantic Ocean in South Carolina. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 7.9 sqkm, of which 7.7 sqkm of the area is land, and 0.1 sqkm, or 1.49% of the total area, is water. === Climate === The climate in the area can be described as warm-summer humid continental (Dfb), or highland subtropical climate (Cfb) depending on the isotherm used; Köppen Climate Classification. This results in an unusual climate compared to the rest of North Carolina; the town's elevation of 3500 to above sea level results in cooler summer temperatures than lowland areas to the east and south. Daytime temperatures in the summer infrequently rise above 80 F. Temperatures in the winter are much colder and harsher than what would be expected in a southern state, being more similar to southern coastal New England. Daytime highs can frequently fall into the 20s or lower. Snow, sleet, and freezing rain are all common in the winter months. Springtime and Autumn in Blowing Rock are both cool and generally pleasant. Rainfall is moderate; thunderstorms are occasional and rarely severe. The biggest 24-hour temperature change recorded in North Carolina was recorded at Blowing Rock on 1 January 1979, yielding a temperature range of 63 degrees, from -8 °F to 55 °F. {{Weather box|width=auto |location = BLOWING ROCK 1NW, NC, 1991-2020 normals |single line = Y | Jan high F = 38.7 | Feb high F = 42.4 | Mar high F = 49.9 | Apr high F = 59.9 | May high F = 66.5 | Jun high F = 72.8 | Jul high F = 77.1 | Aug high F = 74.8 | Sep high F = 70.0 | Oct high F = 60.1 | Nov high F = 50.9 | Dec high F = 42.4 |year high F = 58.8 |Jan mean F = 29.9 |Feb mean F = 33.3 |Mar mean F = 40.0 |Apr mean F = 50.0 |May mean F = 57.3 |Jun mean F = 64.0 |Jul mean F = 68.4 |Aug mean F = 66.6 |Sep mean F = 61.4 |Oct mean F = 51.3 |Nov mean F = 41.6 |Dec mean F = 34.1 |year mean F = 49.8 | Jan low F = 21.0 | Feb low F = 24.2 | Mar low F = 30.2 | Apr low F = 40.1 | May low F = 48.2 | Jun low F = 55.1 | Jul low F = 59.7 | Aug low F = 58.4 | Sep low F = 52.8 | Oct low F = 42.5 | Nov low F = 32.2 | Dec low F = 25.8 |year low F = 40.9 |Jan record high F = |Feb record high F = |Mar record high F = |Apr record high F = |May record high F = |Jun record high F = |Jul record high F = |Aug record high F = |Sep record high F = |Oct record high F = |Nov record high F = |Dec record high F = |year record high F = |Jan record low F = |Feb record low F = |Mar record low F = |Apr record low F = |May record low F = |Jun record low F = |Jul record low F = |Aug record low F = |Sep record low F = |Oct record low F = |Nov record low F = |Dec record low F = |year record low F = |precipitation colour = green | Jan precipitation inch = 5.11 | Feb precipitation inch = 4.08 | Mar precipitation inch = 5.04 | Apr precipitation inch = 5.80 | May precipitation inch = 6.08 | Jun precipitation inch = 5.56 | Jul precipitation inch = 5.59 | Aug precipitation inch = 6.48 | Sep precipitation inch = 6.89 | Oct precipitation inch = 5.01 | Nov precipitation inch = 4.44 | Dec precipitation inch = 6.41 |year precipitation inch = 66.49 | unit precipitation days = 0.01 in | Jan precipitation days = | Feb precipitation days = | Mar precipitation days = | Apr precipitation days = | May precipitation days = | Jun precipitation days = | Jul precipitation days = | Aug precipitation days = | Sep precipitation days = | Oct precipitation days = | Nov precipitation days = | Dec precipitation days = | year precipitation days = |Jan snow inch = |Feb snow inch = |Mar snow inch = |Apr snow inch = |May snow inch = |Jun snow inch = |Jul snow inch = |Aug snow inch = |Sep snow inch = |Oct snow inch = |Nov snow inch = |Dec snow inch = |year snow inch = |unit snow days = 0.1 in |Jan snow days = |Feb snow days = |Mar snow days = |Apr snow days = |May snow days = |Jun snow days = |Jul snow days = |Aug snow days = |Sep snow days = |Oct snow days = |Nov snow days = |Dec snow days = |year snow days = |source 1 = NOAA }}
