===Name===
The municipality (originally the [[prestegjeld|parish]]) is named after the [[Beiar Fjord]] ({{langx|non|Beðir}} or {{lang|non|Beðinn}}). The meaning of the name is uncertain. It may be derived from the [[plural]] form of the word {{wikt-lang|non|beðr}} which means "bedding" (in the sense of a "river bed".
