===Black Prince arrives=== {{more|Black Prince's chevauchée of 1355}} [[File:Edward the Black Prince 1430.jpg|thumb|upright=0.8|alt=Edward, the Black Prince|{{center|Edward, the Black Prince}}]] In 1355 Edward{{nbs}}III's eldest son, [[Edward of Woodstock]], later known as the Black Prince, was given the Gascon command{{sfn|Madden|2014|p=79ff}}{{sfn|Sumption|1999|pp=153–154}} and began assembling men, shipping and supplies.{{sfn|Sumption|1999|pp=154–155}} He arrived in Bordeaux on 20{{nbs}}September accompanied by 2,200 English soldiers.{{sfn|Curry|2002|p=40}}{{sfn|Sumption|1999|pp=168, 175}} The next day he was formally acknowledged as the king's lieutenant in Gascony, with [[plenipotentiary]] powers, by the Gascon officials and dignitaries.{{sfn|Sumption|1999|p=175}}{{sfn|Wagner|2006|p=95}} Gascon nobles reinforced him to a strength of somewhere between 5,000 and 6,000 and provided a bridging train{{sfn|Burne|1999|p=252}} and a substantial [[Train (military)|supply train]].{{sfn|Madden|2014|pp=190, 201, 209}}{{sfn|Wagner|2006|p=96}} Edward set out on 5{{nbs}}October on a {{lang|fr|chevauchée}}, which was a large-scale [[Chevauchée|mounted raid]]. The Anglo-Gascon force marched from Bordeaux {{convert|300|mi}} to [[Narbonne]]{{snd}}almost on the Mediterranean coast and deep in French-held territory{{snd}}and back to Gascony. They devastated a wide swathe of French territory and [[looting|sacked]] many French towns on the way. [[John I, Count of Armagnac|John, Count of Armagnac]], who commanded the local French forces, avoided battle, and there was little fighting. While no territory was captured, enormous economic damage was done to France; the modern historian [[Clifford J. Rogers|Clifford Rogers]] concluded "the importance of the economic attrition aspect of the {{lang|fr|chevauchée}} can hardly be exaggerated."{{sfn|Rogers|1994|p=101}} The expedition returned to Gascony on 2{{nbs}}December having marched {{Convert|675|mi|sigfig=2}}.{{sfn|Burne|1999|p=258}}
