According to the [[United States Census Bureau]], the town has a total area of {{convert|116.4|sqkm|order=flip}}, of which {{convert|111.5|km2|abbr=on|order=flip}} are land and {{convert|4.9|km2|abbr=on|order=flip}} are water, comprising 4.2% of the town.<ref name="CenPopGazetteer2020"/> The highest point in Barnstead is {{convert|1190|ft|m}} above [[sea level]] along the town's northern border, near the community of Locke's Corner. [[New Hampshire Route 28]] traverses the town from north to south, connecting [[Alton, New Hampshire|Alton]] and [[Wolfeboro, New Hampshire|Wolfeboro]] to the north with [[Pittsfield, New Hampshire|Pittsfield]] and [[Suncook, New Hampshire|Suncook]] to the south. [[New Hampshire Route 126]] begins in Center Barnstead and travels southeast to [[Strafford, New Hampshire|Strafford]] and [[Barrington, New Hampshire|Barrington]]. [[New Hampshire Route 107]] cuts through the western corner of Barnstead, leading from Pittsfield in the south to [[Laconia, New Hampshire|Laconia]] in the north.
