Nazi Germany used ''Werwolf'', as the mythical creature's name is spelled in German, in 1942–43 as the codename for [[Werwolf (Wehrmacht HQ)|one of Hitler's headquarters]]. In the war's final days, the Nazi "Operation [[Werwolf]]" aimed at creating a commando force that would operate behind enemy lines as the Allies advanced through Germany itself.

Two fictional depictions of "Operation Werwolf"{{snd}}the US television series ''[[True Blood]]'' and the 2012 novel ''Wolf Hunter'' by J. L.
