There are two major centres of education and research located in the canton of Ticino. [[Università della Svizzera italiana|University of Italian Switzerland]] (USI, Università della Svizzera Italiana) in Lugano is the only Swiss university teaching primarily in Italian. The [[SUPSI|University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland]] (SUPSI, Scuola Universitaria Professionale della Svizzera Italiana), in [[Manno]], is a professional training college focused on a practical method of teaching in the areas of applied art, economy, social work, technology and production science.<ref name="DoC"/>
