In [[Navajo language|Navajo]], verbs have (often multiple) morphemes prefixed onto the verb stem. These prefixes are added to the verb stem in a set order in a prefix positional template. Although prefixes are generally found in a specific position, some prefixes change order by the process of metathesis.

For example, prefix {{spell-nv|'''a-'''}} (3i object pronoun) usually occurs before {{spell-nv|'''di-'''}}, as in

However, when {{spell-nv|'''a-'''}} occurs with the prefixes {{spell-nv|'''di-'''}} and {{spell-nv|'''ni-'''}}, the {{spell-nv|'''a-'''}} metathesizes with {{spell-nv|'''di-'''}}, leading to an order of {{spell-nv|'''di-'''}} + {{spell-nv|'''a-'''}} + {{spell-nv|'''ni-'''}}, as in
