Farrakhan announced that he was seriously ill in a letter on September 11, 2006. The letter was directed to his staff, the Nation of Islam members, and supporters. The letter, published in ''[[The Final Call (newspaper)|The Final Call]]'' newspaper, said that doctors in [[Healthcare in Cuba|Cuba]] had discovered a [[peptic ulcer]].
