===America=== In 1583, [[Humphrey Gilbert]] sailed west to establish a colony in [[Newfoundland]]. He never returned to England. Gilbert's half-brother [[Walter Raleigh]] explored the Atlantic Coast and claimed the territory of [[Colony of Virginia|Virginia]], perhaps named in honour of Elizabeth, the "Virgin Queen". This territory was much larger than the present-day state of [[Virginia]], extending from [[New England]] to the [[Carolinas]]. In 1585, Raleigh returned to Virginia with a small group of people. They landed on [[Roanoke Island]], off present-day [[North Carolina]]. After the failure of the first colony, Raleigh recruited another group and put [[John White (colonist and artist)|John White]] in command.
