Linnaeus published ''Species Plantarum'', the work which is now internationally accepted as the starting point of modern [[botanical nomenclature]], in 1753.<ref name="Stace_p24">[[#Stace|Stace (1991)]], [https://books.google.com/books?id=VfQnuwh3bw8C&pg=PA24 p. 24].</ref> The first volume was issued on 24 May, the second volume followed on 16 August of the same year.{{refn|1=The date of issue of both volumes was later, for practical purposes, arbitrarily set on 1 May, see Stearn, W.
