He was a [[notary]] in transactions and testaments, a [[judge]] in conflicts involving construction and renovation, and took care of craftspeople; statutes involving workshops were approved by the ruler, but Sigismund II Augustus gave this responsibility to magistrates in 1552. Since a 1522 ruling by [[Sigismund I the Old]], Vilnius magistrates had to protect the city and its residents with 24 armed guards.
