Due to the availability of cheap housing, the [[East End of London]] and London Borough of Stepney has been home to various immigrants who have contributed to the culture and history of the area, such as the French [[Huguenot]]s in the 17th century,<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.asp?compid=22743|title=Bethnal Green: Settlement and Building to 1836 – British History Online|website=british-history.ac.uk}}</ref> the Irish in the 18th century,<ref>''Irish in Britain'' John A.
