Egan emigrated to the United States from Ireland with his parents in the early 1830s. While living in Massachusetts, he joined the [[Church of Christ (Latter Day Saints)|Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints]]. He was with the pioneer party of 1847 that journeyed to the west to modern day Salt Lake City, Utah. At the start of the Pony Express, he was appointed Superintendent of the Division from Salt Lake City to Robert's Creek which is in present day Nevada. Egan filled in when others couldn't ride.
