Article 65 of the [[Constitution of Russia]] provides that the JAO is Russia's only [[Autonomous oblasts of Russia|autonomous oblast]].

The Jewish Autonomous Oblast is divided into five [[Raion|districts]], including Birobidzhan, a [[Classification of inhabited localities in Russia|town]] which has [[City of federal subject significance|district status]]; the oblast has one other town ([[Obluchye, Jewish Autonomous Oblast|Obluchye]]) and a further 11 [[urban-type settlements]].
