[[AtlantiCare]] is the largest non-casino employer, with a staff of over 5,500&nbsp;people over five counties, established in 1993 by the Atlantic City Medical Center Board of Governors. Atlantic City Hospital opened in 1898, becoming Atlantic City Medical Center in 1973. In 1840, the first county jail opened in Mays Landing, designed by [[Thomas Ustick Walter]], who also [[Architect of the Capitol|designed the U.S. Capital building]]. This facility was replaced by newer facilities in 1932, 1962, and the current Gerard L. Gormley Justice Facility in 1985, which can hold 1,000&nbsp;inmates.
