American Motors built an assembly plant in Brampton, Ontario, in 1961 for production of motor vehicles for the Canadian market as well as for the United States. With Canada moving to the [[Metrication in Canada|metric system]] during the 1970s, late model Gremlins were built with their speedometers reading in [[kilometers per hour]].
