Writing for ''[[Variety (magazine)|Variety]]'' magazine, [[Todd McCarthy]] observed that the film's success was assisted by its "highly skilled cast of actors", as well as its choice of Lee as director. Despite the recognition given to the film, Lee was not nominated for the [[Academy Award for Best Director]] (though he was nominated for the [[Golden Globe Award for Best Director|Golden Globe]], the [[BAFTA Award for Best Direction|BAFTA]] and the [[Directors Guild of America Award for Outstanding Directing – Feature Film|Directors Guild Award]]).
