The "[[eternal security]]" practical interpretation of perseverance of the saints asserts that an individual can believe he is an elect and will thus irresistibly persevere.{{sfn|Stanglin|2018}} [[Arminianism|Arminians]] often highlight a tension in this view between present [[Faith in Christianity|faith]] in [[Jesus]] and faith in a past event,{{sfn|Ashby|2002|pp=164-169}} namely, election.{{sfn|Davis|1991|loc={{zwnj}}|p=217|ps=. "Calvin, however, has greater confidence than Luther and the Catholic tradition before him that the believer can also have great assurance of his election and final perseverance."}} They argue that such faith in a past event is given equal significance in ensuring final [[Salvation in Christianity|salvation]] as present faith in Jesus.{{sfn|Wynkoop|1967|loc=chap. 6|ps=.
