In 2012, along with his research team and the [[Royal Navy]], Allen attempted to retrieve the [[ship's bell]] from {{HMS|Hood|51|6}}, which sank in the [[Denmark Strait]] during World War II, but the attempt failed due to poor weather. Since 2015, Allen funded the research ship {{ship|RV|Petrel}}, which he purchased in 2016.
