The main television and FM radio transmitter for New Plymouth is located near Tahurangi Lodge on the eastern slopes of [[Mount Taranaki]], {{Convert|25|km||abbr=on}} south of the city. The first transmitter at the site was commissioned in 1966, relaying Wellington's WNTV1 channel (now part of [[TVNZ 1]]).<ref>{{cite news |date=28 June 1967|title=Parliamentary Debates (Hansard)|publisher=New Zealand Parliament|volume=351|page=1394}}</ref> Today, digital terrestrial television (Freeview) is available in the city from the Mount Taranaki transmitter.
