Despite its brevity, the Book of Jonah has been adapted numerous times in literature and in popular culture.{{sfn|Green|2005|page=xv}}{{sfn|Sherwood|2000|pages=71–72}} In [[Herman Melville]]'s ''[[Moby-Dick]]'' (1851), [[Father Mapple]] delivers a sermon on the Book of Jonah. Mapple asks why Jonah does not show remorse for disobeying God while he is inside of the fish.
