One of the onlookers bought ribbons from a nearby millinery store to pin on Williams's players, and the only color available was purple. The Williams [[college mascot]] is a [[purple cow]].<ref name="joProctor" /> The mascot's name, Ephelia, was submitted in a radio contest in October 1952 by [[Theodore Friend|Theodore W.
