The [[United States Department of the Air Force|Department of the Air Force]] is one of three military departments within the [[United States Department of Defense|Department of Defense]], and is managed by the civilian [[United States Secretary of the Air Force|secretary of the Air Force]], under the authority, direction, and control of the [[United States Secretary of Defense|secretary of defense]]. The senior officials in the [[Office of the Secretary of the Air Force|Office of the Secretary]] are the [[United States Under Secretary of the Air Force|under secretary of the Air Force]], four [[Assistant Secretary of the Air Force|assistant secretaries of the Air Force]] and the [[General Counsel of the Department of the Air Force|general counsel]], all of whom are appointed by the president with the [[advice and consent]] of the [[United States Senate|Senate]]. The [[List of Major Commands of the United States Air Force|Major Command]] (MAJCOM) is the superior hierarchical level of command. Including the [[Air Force Reserve Command]], as of 30 September 2006, USAF has ten major commands.
