Turner was asked to join the [[1977 America's Cup]] defense syndicate formed by Hood and Lee Loomis for the [[New York Yacht Club]]. That group still owned the ''Courageous'' but decided to design and construct a new 12 Metre - US–28 ''Independence'' - to defend the 1974 America's Cup victory.
