Located at the junction of two Roman roads, the town has developed into a transport hub over the centuries. It is accessed by two junctions (15 and 16) on the [[M4 motorway]].

The town's [[Magic Roundabout (Swindon)|Magic Roundabout]], at the junction of five roads, contains five mini-roundabouts and has a contra-rotational hub at its centre.<ref>{{cite web |url=http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?ll=51.563003,-1.7710829&z=18&t=h&hl=en-GB |title=Google Maps |website=Google Maps}}</ref> It is built on the site of Swindon Wharf on the abandoned [[Wilts & Berks Canal]], near the [[County Ground (Swindon)|County Ground]]. The official name was ''County Islands'', although it was known colloquially as the ''Magic Roundabout'' and the official name was changed to match its nickname.
